Intel IDF 2008 (San Fran)
Well, I am at IDF in San Fransisco today. I am looking forward to the keynote this morning. If there is anything ground breaking I will post about it in my blog today. I expect additional information on the new 45nm Intel Nahalem processors, as well as details on USB 3.0. What I know so far is USB 3.0 will be increasing the bandwidth from the 480MBs of USB 2.0 too 4.8GBs (10X) for USB 3.0. I have heard that USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0, but may not be backward compatible with USB 1.X. This is concerning. I will update this post as I find out more.

Update:

As I look back at yesterday, I have a few comments about the IDF event. Some positive, some negative.

Negative:
1. Craig Barrett's keynote was probably the worst keynote I have seen at IDF. Keep in mind I have been to at least 10 IDF events in the past.
2. Some of the speakers at IDF for Intel are not very Dynamic. This includes Craig Barrett..... and Dadi Perlmutter.
3. I atteneded IDF to hear about technology, not emerging markets. Intel has gotten way to politically correct, and should be focusing on technology, not political matters.

Postive:
1. The new Nahalem processor has some great features. These include great performance, great power management, and nice support for virtualization.
2. The move to DDR3 and away from FBDIMM's is a good move. FBDIMMs run way to hot, use too much power and in my opinion will follow in the footsteps of the Rambus disaster for Intel.

I will post additional thoughts after day 2.

Update Day 2:

One of the coolet highlights was the Dreamworks display of new 3D movies that are coming in March of 2009 and after. Intel has worked with Dreamworks to help them move forward with the new technology. The demo was quite good. The demo consisted of "Monsters versus Aliens", and Ninja Panda in 3D. I believe this was the first public viewing of "Monsters versus Aliens".

The keynotes for day 2 were much better than day 1.

Update Day 3:

The opeing keynote with Moria Gunn with Steve Wozniak was okay. I have to say that Steve is a little out there. Then again, many of the best minds are..... :)

Conclusion:

One of the better IDF events in the past 5 years. Much better than last year. Overall a success for Intel.

Intel's 'Nehalem' Now Officially Core i7 (HUH?)
Santa Clara (CA) - Intel today unveiled the brand of its upcoming processor: Nehalem, the successor of the Core 2 Duo CPU series, will be introduced as "Core i7" later this year and the company hopes that the new brand will be easily recognized and remembered by customers when they walk into a store to buy a new PC.

Core 3 Duo/Quad would have made way too much sense!

How to delete a bad certificate in Windows.
1. Open a command prompt
2. Run the following command:

Certutil -dcinfo deleteBad

This command will try to validate all the certs, and if they are bad; it will delete them.

How to actually TURN OFF your ZUNE!

The small quick-start guide that came with my Zune  explained that holding down the “Play” button will turn the Zune off. Well, that’s not entirely true!! Holding the play button down will merely put your Zune in “sleep” mode, where you can wake it up by pressing any button (so long as the lock button isn’t activated). So, power is still being used to keep your Zune snoozing until you wake it up.

So what if you want to save your battery power (say, on a long flight)? Is there a way to really turn it off?

Why, yes there is a way by using a combination of buttons on your Zune. If you hold down the Back Button and Down button simultaneously, the Zune will really turn off. If you then hold down the Play button, the Zune will turn back on (note, it will take about 20 seconds for the Zune to completely power up). Below are a few useful combination buttons you can use:

  • Back Button + Down Button = Turn Off
  • Back Button + Up Button = Reset (or Reboot)

So if your device locks up for some reason, you can always try the reboot button sequence. Now, you need to be careful as the following button combinations can be a bit dangerous:

  • Back Button + Center Button + Right Button = Delete all Content
  • Back Button + Center Button + Left Button = Delete all Content and Delete Firmware

So, you really don’t want to accidentally hit those last two button combinations when you’re out of town and away from your Desktop PC, now do you! :)

Play Blu-ray and HD DVD Movies from Vista Media Center.

Like many of you, I have a media center PC in my family room. I use it for everything, but I cannot play HD-DVD and Blu Ray from Media Center. After a little digging I came across a post from Mike over at Attack Computer Wiz. Below are the steps to make it work like it should have from Microsoft. DAM DRM folks !!!

From Mike's Blog post:

I pulled my hair out for hours trying to find the best way to get my Windows Vista Ultimate HTPC to support Blu-ray. Here are my requirements.

1. Play Blu-ray and HD DVD’s directly from Media Center.
2. Native Media Center remote support.
3. Backup my Blu-ray and HD DVD’s to hard disk.
4. Play the backup from the folder on the hard disk.
5. Not take extra steps in the backup process (i.e. creating iso files)
6. Do this with as few programs as possible.

There are guides out there to help with this, like Revision3’s System. But their recommendations fell short of my needs because they suggested CyberLink PowerDVD 8. While this program is very nice, it does not support HD DVD, does not integrate with Media Center, does not integrate the Media Center remote (without the need for additional software, and would not play the backups directly from the folder.
So, leaving the nuts and bolts out of it, and assuming you already have all the hardware you need installed and configured correctly, below are my steps and recommendations. I make no guarantees, but the below steps worked perfect for me and met all of my requirements listed above.

1. Install SlySoft’s AnyDVD HD
2. Install ArcSoft’s TotalMedia Theatre

Two applications are all you need to get this job done. AnyDVD HD allow for the backup your DVD’s to your hard disk drive. TotalMedia Theatre provides full Blu-ray and HD DVD playback and fully integrates with Media Center out of the box. Because of this integration the remote works flawlessly. TotalMedia also has the ability to play the backup videos from thier folders.

How to unregister a DLL in Windows XP or Vista.

Sometimes we need to unregister a dll file to troubleshoot a problem in Windows XP or Vista. Here’s how to do it:

  1. From Start –> Run, type “cmd” then click on Open.
  2. Type “regsvr32 /u filename.dll” where “filename” is the name of the file that you like to unregister.
    regsvr.JPG

Please keep in mind that this involves system modification and can be highly risky. It’s always recommended to keep a system backup handy, in case things go wrong.

Enabling Your Zune in My Computer. Drag and Drop Files To It.

I highly recommend backing up these registry values before modifying anything.

  1. Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and your Zune software isn’t running
  2. open up regedit by going to the start menu and selecting “run”. Type regedt32 and hit “OK”
  3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\
  4. Search for “PortableDeviceNameSpace”. This should be contained in the Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-
_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above …\USB\ The ##’s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Zune
  5. Change the following values:
    • EnableLegacySupport to 1
    • PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0
    • ShowInShell to 1
  6. Plug in your Zune, and make sure the Zune Software starts up, no need to restart your PC.
  7. Hopefully at this point you can open up “My Computer” and browse your device, though it does NOT show up as a drive letter.

Now you can access your Zune as a harddrive and you can sync it through the Zune Software.

For all those Windows haters. Here is a great article and some real life facts about bug fixes and Vista updating. It is quite obvious that Vista is not near as bad as those haters would make you think. Check out the story..... here.
